Wisdom

Sun Flowers, aren't they something special!

Martin Luther King, Jr.  . . . a truism.

Now this should have been around for a long time.   No one would mind waiting for the bus.

Another truism.

Letting go, easier said than done.    Maybe this year we should start our day with a new mantra. . . a quiet prayer . . . a plea to be the best we can be.    Maybe if we just let  go of the string that holds the balloon of  negativism , we can blossom and grow right where are feet are planted.   Remember that one good deed can bring smiles and a release of tears to someone in need.
That hug can reassure someone they really are loved and accepted.    You have work to do this year, so get busy and start your new  year off with your balloon soaring high.   Be a sunflower, strong, independent and daring.   Hugs to all.

Blogger

December 30, 2014 almost the last day of the old year.  I ran into a special blog that caught  my eye , a young lady who wrote a book about angels and became very successful. She has quite a following and above are some of her sayings.  There are a few more I found in timeline photos and 'borrowed' them to share with you.   I find the way we use our words is very important and we must think before we speak so that the words that pour out of our mouths will be pure, simple and loving.   So now  you have some thought and some words to think about and come up with a few thoughts and words to share with those you love.  You have a whole new year coming up and you can practice a new word each day .

Come to think of that, I have a new calendar, a Christmas gift from Bob and Andrea, with a brand new word for each day.   I was just happy it was not one of those not so easy puzzles.   I got three more and each one looks harder than the first one.   One is all those fancy colorful Greek Easter Eggs, all patterns and mixtures of colors and designs that are going to be very hard to put together.   I have a word...challenge....see, how easy it is!!

So remember practice makes perfect . . . soft words, big smiles, and lots of hugs . . . what a way to start a New Year.   Hugs to all.

Photographers

Son John sent a picture of the little Christmas tree in the back yard.  I wonder if they decorated it.  I bet they did put lights on it.  Nice size.

Angie was on a road trip to visit family and friends and saw this roof along the way.   Patriotic.   Good for the owners.  Bless them too.

Sheila sent pictures of the beautiful yellow aspen trees.  Reminded me of  the  a Nevada valley leading to Reno  from Carson City.

Angie took this picture of a sunset  up in the Newport, Oregon area.

See, if you send me pictures I will not only love them and enjoy them but will put them on the blog to share with others.  We can all use a little beauty in our lives.

Three days to a new year.   I wonder if the old year was good to you.   I wonder if we used our seconds wisely.   I wonder why time flies faster during certain times of life and drags along other times.   I wonder about a lot of things and I bet you do too.  We have much to wonder about as the world turns on its axis the same as it always does but now with the latest modes of communication everything comes within seconds, good and bad news.   Another terrible disappearance of a plane with one hundred sixty souls on board.   Another upheaval in a race war that should not be, which is due to the politics of Obama and his cohorts.    We are all aware of the differences of the folks who choose to disobey the law and those who fight daily to uphold the law.    So today as  you start your new week, think, think about what you can do in  your little corner of your world to make it bigger, brighter, better and be the best you can be.  Hugs to all.

Wow!

Yosemite National Park  is always beautiful.  I have a picture on my bedroom wall similar to this.
At long last, a picture of my grandson Mason and his wife Amy.   They are very proud of their new puppy and rightly so .
John sent a picture of his berry bush.  I bet the birds love this.

Here it is Sunday morning and the weather is turning colder.   The forecast is for a bit of snow which may, or may not, reach the valley floor.   We really don't get much snow, more like a bit of slush when it does come our way.   I'll have to check and see if there is a shovel in the garage just in case we have a surprise one of these winter months.  We had sunshine yesterday and the new team of garden workers came and put my yard back in order.   Four men who worked quickly and quietly, well not to quiet as the had  the  electric clippers going full tilt and made the hedge look beautiful and a new shape to it.   They sprayed the weeds and clipped the bushes and made short work of the tall grass.   A bit pricey but worth it to have dead bushes removed and come Spring I can add a bit of color and find some low growing plants., and, I found a way to pass on some of those Christmas cookies.

Three more days and we have a New Year to look forward to.    Get ready to celebrate.    Start the plans . . . resolutions you will keep. . . hugs you will share . . . deeds you will accomplish. . . . diets  you wont keep . . . and a desire to live life on your own terms.    You have lots to do this year so keep Faith, Hope and Charity in your life and share it.   Hugs to all.

Light

Light
Shadows
Time

I was looking for some pictures to add to the blog and found Time Line Photos.  Each one of the many  pictures was more beautiful and thought provoking than I could imagine.    I cannot give credit to individual photographers but would if I could as each picture captured the true beauty and power of life.  How lucky we are to be able to stand still and not only see but feel the magic of the world that surrounds us.

2014 is coming to its ending and very soon we will have a new year to spend our seconds.    The word 'choices' comes to mind;  be wise , be thoughtful, be careful and live your seconds in a way that you attain the courage of your convictions.   Our days are filled with light and shadows;  move from one to the other in grace and love as  you share YOU with those  you love.  You can lead or you can follow;  you can bring joy or sorrow;  choices are extremely important as they make or break the seconds  you live each day.

Do not be afraid to have Faith, it makes you stronger.   Do not be afraid to have Hope as it keeps you  alert.  Do not be afraid to love  for it makes us whole.    Soon you will be thinking of making resolutions for  your new year . . . choices . . . make them shine in the sunlight and shadows of your coming days.   Hugs to all.

Wonders

There are more stars in heaven than grains of sand on earth.

Christmas is like that as it brings everyone, or a good portion of the earth's folks, into a feeling of warmth, fellowship, and opens the heart, the mind and the soul into the need and want to be loved.   Within each of us there is a special need to be accepted for who and what we are.   The preparations takes weeks and in a matter of hours it is over leaving us with a longing for the endless feelings of being loved.  So many brought about complete happiness for family and friends as they celebrated the birthday of the baby Jesus.  They opened gifts, enjoyed the fruits and labor of those who did the cooking and taste buds were  more than satisfied .  Hugs and kisses were plentiful and smiles were rampant.  Now, the secret of success is to keep those feelings going one moment at a time.    Reach out, adopt a friend and be a harbinger of  hope and love.  Keep the spirit of Christmas going each day, every day.   There are no laws that say Christmas is for one day.  Hugs to all.

MERRY CHRISTMAS

Merry Christmas and Happy New Year

Friends

Along the way
we gather
babies, girls and boys
even grownups
to extend our family

we call them friends
because we know
they capture our hearts
each day

some call
some come
some share a meal
others are away

but soon the mailman
brings a note
a card
a word of cheer

how blessed we are
every day
when we have family
and friends
to share.

JMS

Christmas morning.  I am thinking of each of  you this morning.    I thank you for caring, for sharing, for  your gifts of love and life.   I treasure each one of you.   May your  Christmas day be blessed.  Hugs to all.

Political Cartoons

Monkey see, Monkey Do, Monkey Say!!

Secret talks for months . . . um. . . executive pen and telephone at work.

The battle goes on.

Ah, sanity, peace and tranquility in Sedona.   Bob, Andrea and Wendy were out sight seeing.  They love to hike and find many beautiful places to  visit and lucky for us they take a camera along and share beautiful pictures with us.

"Christmas Eve will find us where the love light gleams;  I'll be home for Christmas if only in my dreams."   bet  you have heard that a lot this past few weeks.  A lot of folks are on the road today heading home.  I hope the weather stays calm and they get to their destination  without any problems.

I am off to make my coffee and wake up and give you a break from all my 'words';  a small Christmas gift to all.  Go . . . be bright and merry and have a wonderful Merry Christmas with those  you love.  Hugs to all.

Greetings

Barbara and Dick Edminson dressed up in their best caps and send merry wishes to all.  What a cute card and it showed them cavorting about having a wonderful time.   Leave it to Barbara to find something bright and beautiful to share with her family and friends.

Haven't heard from friend Jane in some e time but her she is with her latest creation along with a nice long greeting on e-mail.  It is so good to catch up with those we miss all  year.

Here is Joseph, Judy's grandson  and I get to play great grandma. . . what a cutie.   John and Allison look pretty special and they are all excited about a new baby girl on the way.

The little alien, the last of the orchids.   Now you have to admit he has possibilities.   Reminds me of a duck with those web feet.   Maybe that is a candle it is holding. . . reminds me to light a few for those who are not here to celebrate Christmas with us.

Yesterday was a fun day as I got to watch the first of the Hobbit movies.  It is amazing what the movie makers can do.  Erin and Pat made up a batch of gingerbread ladies and used a new tube like package for frosting them.   I couldn't make it work as it  took a strong steady hand, but I had fun trying to make eyes with a toothpick.   Erin had the young hands and did a great job finishing them up.   I took time out to go over and check on Darlene and Peat.   Darlene was asleep so I didn't awaken her and spent time with Peat talking about his young days when he grew up as a farm boy.   He had lots of tales to tell and they should be written up for his grandchildren and great -grands.    This man was an engineer and spent time helping to build the space engines;  my what a yarn he spins.  I told him to get a small recorder and I'd type up his notes.  Darlene is coming along very slowly but is healing and that is good news.

So today, visit the sick, take  goodies along with you.  LaVerne brought me over two fruit cakes for Christmas and she makes a wonderful brandy soaked one.    I even supplied some left over brandy this year.    If you are in my neighborhood, stop in, I'll cut you a slice or two.   What?  You don't like fruit cake . . . well, why not?  It really is tasty .   I know, I know, to each his own.

I hope you have caught up with yourself and are all ready  for Christmas morning.    I hope  those of  you who live in snow country, have a beautiful snowy Christmas.  We have rain, Oregon snow, although the higher levels may have gotten a flurry or two.   Our days have been dark and dreary but they have also been inside days which  has given us plenty of seconds to finish all our Christmas chores.   I hope you are all caught up.    I'm off to have my coffee and wake up . . . five a.m. and my blog is finished. . . wow. . . a quiet time of day.   Be of good cheer,  smile because you can, cry if you have to but get it all out and done with so you can have a very Merry Christmas with family and friends you love.    Remember to be kind, considerate and helpful along with a big smile, a hug or two and  make a few new memories.   Hugs to all.

Stuff

the very first King Size Bed . . .

Some folks must have felt they were on a dig.

and the best they could say was that now they would be able to get some Cuban cigars!

Our first half black but all Muslim president has renewed the seeds of hatred  . . . what is that old adage of being known by the company you keep . . .  sad but true.

Don't we all.

A new week, Christmas week ready or not.   The rains persist and the roads resist as we have one that fell through yesterday and the off road is being tested to see if trucks can use it today.   It is up north of us.  One of these years the folks in charge of roads will have to make up their minds that a new road is needed and necessary especially for trucks.   Route 101 is ancient and take heavy duty traffic daily and has for  years.   They have had to deal with some huge repair problems over the years.

Erin arrived safe and sound and we are going to have a cookie bake today.    I found out it pays to read the back of the package of chocolate bits which tells you how to make bars instead of, or along with, cookies.   I tried it yesterday and much to my surprise the bars turned out to be delicious and so much faster than making individual cookies.   A great addition to  your cookie trays. I bet they taste good for breakfast; maybe I'll have a couple this morning.

I noticed not many read the Christmas short story yesterday on the blog.   Sad, as you missed out on a wonderful lesson on how to share yourself and give a start to a youngster in need.    The fact that you benefit more escapes many, but the truth is the more you give the more you receive and the happier you are.   I know, it is a busy time of year, maybe  you'll find time later and give yourself a treat in some food for thought.  It is never to late for good deeds, small or large,  take time to stop, look and listen and become a Santa Clause.   Be of good cheer . . . that requires a smile with your eyes;    don't be a Scrooge, donate to a special cause like the wounded warriors.   Be generous with your hugs as some folks don't get many.   Give the gift of YOU and enjoy every second of it.   Hugs to all.

Christmas Letter - A short Story

Every year I receive a Christmas Letter from the Oregon Pacific, Financial Advisers, Inc., signed by Don Todd, President and he encloses a small calendar for my purse.  Why I am on his list is a mystery as I have no money to invest...but I did write him a thank you note.   Each year he tells a special story and this year I thought I'd share his letter with all of you.as it is a true story but the names have been changed.  I had never heard this one and I think it should be told as we now have more children in need of  a helping hand than ever before.

"This past summer I attended a beautiful wedding at the ranch, where the following events take place.  The bride was the sister of the girl in the story.  It is about giving - and I thought you might find the events different and inspiring.   It all started with the sale of a show steer.  That simple transaction eventually directed the path of a  young girl from a broken family and an uncertain future, to a life full of promise and hope.

The owner of a ranch for more than 30 years, Gary, had been working with cattle his whole life.  The business had helped him support and raise his two children, now grown with children of their own.  In the fall of 2005, a mother and her 12-year old daughter Elizabeth visited his ranch to purchase a show steer.  Gary, quite reserved by nature, was struck by the girl's high level of energy.  He thought to himself about how different the two of them were.

The mother purchased the steer for Elizabeth,  yet both of them lacked the experience to raise the calf.  They decided the young steer name Ty would remain on Gary's ranch and Gary would coach ever-eager Elizabeth on how to feed and manage him, including everything from proper washing and brushing to nutrition and health.  While working with Elizabeth during her project, Gary immediately recognized the young girl's work ethic and desire to succeed.  Through multiple visits and coaching sessions over nine months, Ty flourished and Elizabeth learned how to show the steer.

The following summer, Elizabeth showed Ty at the county fair, where she was scrutinized and thoroughly questioned on her knowledge of her project.  Not only did Elizabeth have the beginning understanding of raising a show steer, she proved that she had spent countless hours working with Ty and she won the Reserve Champion Steer.  After the competition, Elizabeth darted through the crowd of fair-goers to find Gary  .  She gave him a hug and in a broken voice thanked him for all of his help.

Elizabeth's mom approached Gary later, confessing that Elizabeth rarely opened up to people.  It was difficult for the young girl to trust others.  He learned that her brother was always in trouble and Elizabeth showed signs that she would follow in the same footsteps.

Over time, her mother purchased more steers and Gary and Elizabeth's relationship grew as she shared more about her troubled past and current struggles.  Gary had lost his own father at the age of six so he understood the challenges of growing up in a less than ideal home.

Unfortunately, outside of the ranch, Elizabeth's behavior had taken a downturn.  She'd been caught stealing.  After learning about her poor choices, Gary didn't want to interfere and began to distance himself from the troubled youth.  She noticed immediately and sought him out and confronted him.  "You're mad at me, aren't you?"

He responded, "No, I'm just disappointed in you.  I have not told you this, but I truly love you and care for what the future holds for you."

It was a turning point in Elizabeth's life.  Instead of spending time with her peers in situations that would lead to trouble, Elizabeth decided to spend more and more time on the ranch with Gary mending fences, feeding cattle, helping with calving and vaccinating - every thing necessary to manage a successful cattle operation.  She joined the Future Farmers of America where she got involved with public speaking, fund raisers, and livestock judging.

Gary jokes that after shadowing him on the ranch for five years, Elizabeth is capable of managing the entire operation by herself.  Regarding his role in her turnaround, he says, "She jut  needed someone to look up to, someone who would show her that she has lots of choices in her life.  I'm glad I could be there for her and her family."  He realized now that she wasn't the only one who'd had difficulty connecting with others. Though their relationship, he'd learned how to open up as well.

The lessons on the ranch proved to be as important as ones in the the classroom.  After raising multiple champions at the fair and being named one of the top livestock judges in the state two years in a row, Elizabeth found success wherever she has applied herself.  Now 17 years old, she was recently awarded a full-ride scholarship to college where she plans to study veterinary medicine.

Her mom concludes, "Gary's relationship with Elizabeth is the reason she is where she's at today.  It helped define who she is and who she will become."

It was a simple gift.  The gift of time, guidance, acceptance, and hope.  A gift that changed both Gary and Elizabeth's lives.

This holiday season, may you recognize those that have influenced your life with simple gifts, and may you find opportunities to give to others in simple ways that have the power and potential to make a life-long impact in the coming year.  Merry Christmas and Happy New Year!

I hope you enjoyed  the short story and will take time out this year to try and give a helping hand to someone in need.   A touch of a hand.   A smile.   A small donation to a worthy cause.   Reading to a small child.   Maybe a little volunteer time to help a youngster succeed in school.  And if you are young and strong, maybe take in a youngster or two who has been abandoned through no fault of  his or her own.  The sad part of getting old is not regrets but understanding all of the things you could have accomplished if you had searched for the needs and not the wants.   So be smart, be a leader and share that big heart  of yours.    Hugs to all.

Admire

Here are the last of the Holland flower show.   Two cyclists ready for a ride in the sunshine.   Clever and I bet not easy to put together.

and last but not least is a beautiful elephant all decked out.

Here is a great idea . . . make a wreath for your bird friends.   All it takes is patience and a little of your time.  It takes a bowl, a spoon, a whisk, non stick oil spray and a pretty ribbon .  The recipe:  one package of Knox gelatin, a half cup of warm water;  three tablespoons of corn syrup; 3/4 cup of flour which you stir together and it makes a big bowl of paste . . then add the bird seed and let set for at least 48 hours.   Daughter Christine was bemoaning how many trips she made to the store for bird seed this year.  She has a yard with a tree with cut limbs that has tiny bird  houses nailed on and this year the birds have come in droves.   Maybe they found a haven from all of the cold wet snow and rain this winter.

I have pictures of me with my children when they were very little just like this.    As a lover of books and the joy of reading I wanted my children to learn  early  about the wonders within the covers.   Each one has a love of reading and I  am sure all the love and hugs made them feel content, it sure didn't do me any harm.  I finally decided to try writing a short novel, one could enjoy on  a trip and  finish by the time you got to your destination.   Such fun I have had.   I had a computer letter yesterday from a friend who just purchased "Decades" on Amazon.  She could equate with the theme of  'down-sizing' and the struggle to survive in a different environment.   She has a partner who has Alzheimer and  is now in a care facility and tells of the struggle to survive and accept the things that she cannot change.    We carry many crosses in life  and struggle to find the answers in faith and hope .  Many books have been written on this subject and our hope is that a cure will be found for Alzheimer and other auto-immune diseases that plaque so many folks.  Meanwhile, "Valley Haven" is getting good reviews.   So all that reading didn't do me any  harm.

The weekend is here already. . . we are due in for a big storm.  The ocean waves were high and crazy yesterday and today the newspaper has a warning on the computer about the incoming storm with waves up to twenty-eight feet;  now that is a sight to see, a dangerous one if you get to close.  The rivers are running high so there could be some flooding.  We have many rivers that run from the mountain side to the ocean.    Erin is due to fly in tomorrow and we are hoping the storm lets up and she arrives safe and sound.    Come to think of it, makes for a good baking day, so may be that is a mission for today.

Remember to be thankful for your health, mental and physical, and take a moment to offer up a prayer or two for those who have lost their health, especially our wounded warriors.    Don't run around like a chicken with your head cut off, take time to organize and make your list so you can check off one thing at a time.   Save a little energy for you so you can have the energy to  walk into a hug and give some back.    Let your inner light shine and be a beacon of hope.   Hugs to all.

Winter

A delightful picture, someone with a good eye and a love of nature.   A good spot to spend some of those seconds  with family and friends.  Peace and quiet, maybe a sleigh ride . . . winter does have its compensations.

I know you have heard those words.  I bet you even spoke them on occasion.

Serenity . . . Peace . . . Harmony.   Bob and Andrea and their daughter Wendy went for a hike along this river.  Andrea is great about sending off pictures for my blog.   Not a ripple in the stream.   Winter in Arizona.

Here they are, Bob, Andrea and Wendy.   Beautiful people inside and out.,

I thought you would like this one.   It could be called 'patience' as it must have taken a long while to perfect it.   A great way to wish you well.
Can you believe it is Friday already.   The seconds are flying bye and over half of December has gone by the wayside.  Daughter Pat and I stopped off at Fred Meyers yesterday to do our Christmas good deed.  Pat had a name from a Christmas tree, a young fellow who wanted a basketball and she chose a great one.  She was amazed at the amount of name tags on the tree this  year and the requests were for cell phones and special boards that cost an arm and a leg.  The youngsters have a lot to learn about priorities.   I usually  head for the book department and find all kinds of children's books with crayons and stickers with fun things to do.   The ladies were busy marking them down so I got to buy a few extra this year.   The box was empty.   I hope it gets filled up today.  Do a good deed and buy a gift or two and help fill those boxes.

I made my spaghetti sauce yesterday and filled a big jar for our friends who are having such a bad time of it.   They did receive a little extra help yesterday so maybe the tide will turn and both will be back to feeling a lot better.   Accidents are never fun, always unexpected, always painful and it only takes a second to change your life.  Think, 'there but by the grace of God, go I', and you will know what to do.

Your weekend starts and I am sure you have much to do.   Go be Mr. and Mrs. Bountiful and share YOU with those you love.  I had fun yesterday playing 'greeter' as I waited for my ride home and it was cold and breezy standing in front of Freddy's store.   I discovered smiling eyes gets even the grumpiest looking person to react and nod or smile.  Everyone needs a smile.   Experiment today and smile at strangers and watch their reaction . The worst that can happen is they think you are a nut case and hurry bye.   The best thing that can happen is they respond in kind and smile and wish you a Merry Christmas.    Be brave, be strong and be a 'nut' once in awhile.   Hugs to all.

Exceptional

Swans, a master piece in flowers.   Oh to have such talent to grow beautiful flowers and make them into such wondrous sights.

aren't they something?    Makes me feel good just looking at them.

How serious can you get?

A butterfly in all its glory.

and this is what chalk looks like under a microscope.   Hidden beauty.

The flower attachment was really awesome.    The flowers are beautiful in their own right , but when you have gardeners who create such awesome designs, you want to invite them over to your garden and set them free.    Speaking of gardeners, well I am thinking about them , I know I've spoken and written about them in earlier blogs , I have had four wonderful men in my life who were true men of the earth.   Why I didn't pay close attention and learn how to garden is beyond me.   Pa who turned a small city lot into a haven of  beauty and help through the Depression years.   Hobey turned three lots into  a treasure trove of every imaginable vegetable you could want;  even Hubbard squash as big as a watermelon which now sells in  the stores for over two dollars a pound.   Clarence who  grew California style trees and fruits that were so different and tasty.  and now Jock who has a real blueberry tree and  small garden patch that has a little bit of everything to keep you healthy and hardy;  blueberries to die for and Swiss chard that is so delicious.    It takes talent , dedication and a true love of gardening . . . and a lot of very hard work.  It is not for sissies.  I always wondered how they made it look so easy.
I even tried gardening in my day, but the first tomato bug looked so big and ugly I shied away.  I just don't like creepy crawlers of any kind , and if the truth be known, I am a bit lazy when it comes to all that hard work.

The days are flying by and there is much to do as Christmas is almost here.    Our rain continues and the gray days are good for baking and catching up with some of the chores we let go when we want to be out and about.    It is a lot of hard work to clean out the drawers in the kitchen and bathrooms, but it has to be done.   I am always amazed at how crumbs find their way into  what I think is closed drawers.   Osmosis, I guess.    It is a job that doesn't show so when you look around after all that work, it is like you had a lazy day.  It is a good way to down size.   I wonder why the drawers are always so crowded. . . well it is because we keep adding new gadgets to help peel a potato when a small paring knife is all that is needed.   Six wine stoppers for one bottle of wine. . . cookie cutters you no longer use or need. . . things that take up room although there are some things you just can't live without .   So if you come visit , I'll show you my clean drawers;  I know you can't wait to see them.

Go, have some fun today.  do something you have been thinking about and haven't quite made up your mind whether  you should take the time off or not.....GO!!!  It will do you good.   Don't forget you have to help make Christmas bright for some that have little or nothing.  Get out there and show some spirit  . . . the kind that makes the world a better place. . . be good, be kind and gentle and share a hug and a smile.   Hugs to all.
