Idioms

The dictionary says Idiom is an expression peculiar to a language.  the attachment said "Lost Words of our childhood" . . . "Heaven to Murgatroyd!" and that the spell checker did not recognize the word murgatroyd.    The attachment was lengthy and I am not sure you would enjoy reading all of it, although, I think you would get a big kick out of it.   Some of the words you probably have ingrained in your brain from childhood, others may never have heard them, so I'm going to choose some and see what kind of  reaction I get.   The author of the article is Richard Lederer "Words and phrases remind us of the way we word"

As the author said, :I hope you are 'hunky dory' after you read this and chuckle.   Some of the expressions have become obsolete..."don't touch that dial," "You sound like a broken record." or "Hung out to dry".  In the old days we had "a lot of moxie."  We put on "our best bib and tucker" or were told to "straighten up and fly right".  Hubba-hubba .  We'd cut a rug in some juke joint and then go necking and petting and smooching and spooning and billing and cooing and pitching woo in hot rods and jalopies in some passion pit or lovers lane.  Heavens to Betsy!  Gee  whillikers! Jumping Jehoshaphat! Holy Moley! We were in like Flynn and living the Life of Riley, and even a regular guy couldn't accuse us of being a knucklehead, a nincompoop or a pill.  Not for all the tea in China.

The author went on with a lot more and wound up saying "We of a certain age have been blessed to live in changeful times.  For a child each new word is like a shiny toy, a toy that has no age.  We at the other end of the chronological arc have the advantage of remembering there are words that once did not exist and there were words that once strutted their hour upon the earthy stage and now are heard no more, except in our collective memory.  It's one of the greatest advantages of aging.  We can have archaic (always thought it was cake) and eat it too..." See you later alligator! After awhile crocodile."

I am laughing because some of these idioms come naturally and I spout them all the time.  I hope you had a short walk down memory lane and remember a few favorites of your very own.

Go, have some fun today and throw a few of those fancy words around and see what kind of reaction you get.    Top your words with a hug or two, add a good deed and a smile and you will have made your day and some one else you love and like one very 'happy camper'.   Hugs to all.
